Ex-Edinburgh social worker heads to USA for new book

Added: (Mon May 16 2022)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Retired Edinburgh social worker Roger Leslie Paige has returned the United States for his latest gripping collection of stories.
The 73-year-old has built up a loyal following since picking up the pen almost twenty years ago to start writing his own tales of the unexpected.
Roger, who is heavily influenced by Anton Chekhov, Albert Camus and Samuel Beckett, has released well-received books on social work and chess, as well as more than a dozen collections of short stories.
His latest work, The Sweet By and By, is another fascinating slice of unpredictable fiction that provides a plethora of thought-provoking scenarios and solutions.
Roger explained: “The Sweet By and By story is comprised of four interwoven episodes about a young climate change couple, a mysterious individual wandering the Maine back roads, an Ambassador from an inter-planetary organisation, and the person responsible for the discovery of a simple method of inter-planetary travel.
“The big question that goes with all four parts is, are they fact or are they fiction?
“It is up to the reader to decide.”
Roger’s own story is every bit as intriguing as his stories.
After graduating he taught for several years before taking employment with the Post Office.
His wanderlust took him across the Atlantic to the United States, where he worked as a fruit picker and janitor of a papermill.
After returning home he went on to have a hugely successful career in social work back in Scotland, poignantly told in his memoirs, The Edinburgh Cyrenians.
But his spell in America has continued to influence many of his addictive short stories.
As well as eponymous The Sweet By and By story, his latest collection also includes the story of a rescued sailor who can’t settle back on dry land, and another of an unexpected opportunity for an aspiring photographer.
Roger added: “Far, Far Away is about a lone female yachtswoman who is marooned by a storm on a Pacific island.
“Its only occupants are a mysterious man and the wild animals.
“After her fortuitous rescue by a cruise ship, she returns to her family in the USA.
“But she is unable to settle and decides to write a book then return to the island to find her erstwhile companion.
“Star Light, Star Bright is about a film star who, avoiding the celebration at the end of filming, spends the day with a young photographer before she returns home to Europe.
“Unexpectedly, the photographer is offered an exhibition at a prestigious gallery in Paris.”
