Pressbox (Press Release) - perfect setting for his debut thriller.
Richard Wright has just published A Razor’s Edge to critical acclaim.
But the 70-year-old from Farnham admits his favourite walking routes made shaping his explosive plot that little bit easier.
Richard said: “I think the main inspiration was the Lake District itself and knowing its wonder, but also how dangerous it can be.
“I had written a number of short stories which gave me ideas on events and characters, so a number of factors came together.
“Nearly all of the book is based in the Lake District.
“I have walked its fells for over 40 years and know very well the particular places chosen as settings for all the events.
“The Lakes is a beautiful place but also dangerous and gives great locations for murders and challenges.
“I did revisit places I know in the Lakes that I used as locations to double check nothing had changed.”
A Razor’s Edge follows the investigation led by DCI Diana Petrou and DC Stephanise Giles following three sniper shootings.
From the precarious fells and high passes of the Lakes, the murder probe takes the detectives onto the treacherous sands of Morecambe Bay after a prominent scientist is killed with an ice pick – and his assassin dies after becoming trapped in quicksand.
Richard’s edge-of-the-seat thriller leads Petrou and Giles from the trail of a serial killer to a drug dealer, a government conspiracy theory, and even MI5.
Since the publication of A Razor’s Edge, it has been met with a string of five-star reviews.
Critics have described Richard’s debut as ‘an addictive read’, ‘compelling’, and ‘a great read’.
Fellow reviewer Anne Simpson stated: “Once I started, I couldn’t put it down.”
As well as being a gripping five-star thriller, A Razor’s Edge also explores a few burning environmental issues.
Richard, who is a member of the Farnham writing group, added: “I wanted to write a thriller that said something in its conclusion about the climate change crisis we face.”
As well as enjoying a successful professional career before his retirement, which also included working for IBM and the Dartington Trust, Richard coached youth football for more than 20 years.
The avid Chelsea supporter also spent a year as a corporate fundraiser for Save the Children.
