Are people being heard now or are we all more interested in speaking, and therefore, there is no one listening? The importance of dialogue is the key question author and activist Meliha Avdic addresses in her novel “Just Another Life,” the second edition of which has just been released.

Protagonist May Bahar is an old woman haunted by a memory of a particular period of her life, and she is compelled to write every conversation she hears decades after it happened. May takes us back to the late 1990s, the last decade before the birth of social media, when people were largely unheard because there was no public space for them to voice their thoughts, ideas, and opinions. She demonstrates not only the ability to converse but also to respectfully disagree and remain friends.

Just Another Life, a literary fiction story inspired by true events, shows that ordinary people are concerned about the state of the world, that they talk about various social issues, but also that they can’t do much about it. In turn, this suggests that our democracy may not be functional.
One reader said, “Unique plot built around the moral of the story, with well-developed characters holding everything together, yet they fail to hold their own lives, changing to fit into their new environment that is changed by outside forces. Unique delivery of a unique message.”

About: Meliha Avdic has spent decades listening to people talk about social issues and the way they see the world. Many of these conversations have never been heard far and wide and to remedy this, she created a character, May, to share them. Meliha has been involved in citizen activism from an early age when she moved from war-torn Bosnia to the UK as a refugee. After completing a BA in Economics, she went on to complete an MSc in Voluntary Action Management. She claims to have two passions: people and books.
